Current Event #1 T1 "Never Again"

In summary of the article “‘Never Again’” by Patricia Smith, the  group ‘Never Again’ was formed by teenagers from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida after the school shooting there in February. 17 students and staff members were killed and it inspired some of the surviving seniors to take action for more laws on gun control and more gun restrictions. ‘Never Again’ got thousands upon thousands of followers within days of the shooting. They started forming political rallies, walkouts, researching legal framework, interviewing people, appearing on tv and meeting with lawmakers. They have declared a national march on Washington D.C., changed Florida state law, and even met with President Donald Trump, all while inspiring other students at other schools all across the nation to stand up and hold rallies, protests, and walkouts of their own. One of the only things in their way was that the legislator was not convinced more gun control was the way to go. This has been a subject they’ve been struggling with for years. People are saying their protests are drawing similarities to the “influential student protest movements against the Vietnam war in 1960-70. On February 21, about 100 students from the D.C. area marched just over 5 miles to the white house, and met with students from other schools for a protest. Although a lot of people think this is a great movement, not everyone agrees. Some of the students have been faced with death threats and harassment through social media sources, and they have had to just ignore the hate and remember that speaking out about gun control is whats helping them grieve. They want closure that this won't happen to other schools. Do you think these teens will tip the scales?

This event is a lot to take in, and my honest opinion is that these teens should not be fighting for stricter gun laws. If you look at statistics, a lot of the places that have the strictest gun laws have most of the school shootings. Florida was an exception. But think about it this way: If you teach kids from a young age that guns can be used safely and that child knows what to do and not to do with guns, we would have less accidents. If everyone knows teachers have guns in schools, why would they risk it? If they know that anyone on the street could have a gun, why would they risk it? For this event, I honestly think we should be teaching gun safety to teachers and giving issued guns that will be locked in a drawer where the students can't get it. That's my opinion. What's yours?
